Functional Family Therapy (FFT)

What is the Functional Family Therapy (FFT) Program?

The Functional Family Therapy (FFT) Program provides services to adolescents and families living in Fresno County. FFT is an evidenced-based practice designed to work with adolescents who are either at-risk of involvement or involved in the Juvenile Justice System. The model takes into consideration cultural, ethnic and the individual differences. Its main purpose is to match the treatment to the adolescent and family and focuses on family relationships as the core of change. Families are given the option to have services at the CYS office, home, school or a community location to make services more accessible.

Our FFT staff work closely with the adolescent and his/her family members to develop inner strengths and abilities to improve their relationships with one another, achieve greater self-sufficiency, improve academic performance, and reduce further involvement with the justice system. Services include family counseling, case management, crisis intervention, support in re-entry to school, vocational preparation and support, and mentoring.

Who is eligible for this program?

Youth from 11 to 17 years of age who are referred through Fresno County Juvenile Court, Department of Probation, Department of Behavioral Health, Department of Social Services, or by local school districts are eligible for this program. There may be a waiting list for services.

How do I apply for this service?

Please contact the Comprehensive Youth Services Main Office / Clinicial Facility at (559) 229-3561 and ask for the FFT Care Manager.

What is the cost for the FFT program?

Services may be covered by Medi-Cal, private insurance or MHSA funds.

Effective July 1, 2011, the Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health began to apply the “Uniform Method of Determining Ability to Pay (UMDAP)” to all MHSA programs (Functional Family Therapy is a qualified MHSA program).  Comprehensive Youth Services will assist families  in applying for UMDAP so that they may qualify for low cost services based on income.
